| We were raised in McCormick, SC by our parents, John and Rose Talbert. Our mother and father instilled a love of history in us at an early age. Today, Rosemary Hopkins, who is retired, lives in Washington, GA. John Talbert, Jr. and his wife Linda, live in Waycross, GA where he works in the wood industry. Nancy Moore, a school nurse, lives with her husband, Marion, in Greenwood, SC. The idea of creating a series of historical plates was not unique to us. Rosemary and John, both living in Georgia have collected the Georgia Historical Plates which were started in 1933. During a family get-together, we talked of finding South Carolina’s History Plates, but soon discovered that none existed. Hence began the process… South Carolina is rich in history…so much so that condensing its people, places and events into a series of plates was more difficult than we anticipated. With help from Martha Patterson, a long time friend and local historian, we began listing and prioritizing these people, places, and events that were and are South Carolina. Montie Reese, our aunt from Greenwood, and Beth Builderback, of the South Caroliniana Library, also contributed valuable input. Now, our collection has come to fruition, but still remains a work in progress. The series begins with sixteen plates, but as we continue to discuss and yes, even sometimes argue over what to include, more will arrive. As we continue to broaden the collection, we would love additional input. See our ‘Contact Us’ to suggest any thoughts or ideas. We hope that you will enjoy the South Carolina History Plates as much as we do. We look forward to hearing from you.
